Kevin Miller, who lives in Daytona North, said he believes in honesty. Miller was leaving PetSmart at the Palm Coast Landing shopping center around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, when he came across a wallet on the ground in the middle of the parking lot.

Miller, 27, said he wasn't sure at first if he should pick it up. But he told the Flagler County Sheriff's Office that he saw someone "eyeballing it," so he grabbed it. He quickly realized it was full of cash and credit cards.

Quite a bit of cash, actually.

Miller called the Sheriff's Office to report the lost wallet. While he waited for a deputy to arrive, Miller counted the cash.

"My jaw dropped," he told the Sheriff's Office.

There was $3,400 in cash in the wallet.

Miller said he felt self-conscious while he waited in his vehicle for the deputy to arrive.

"I didn't want to be accused of stealing this money," he said. "It was just crazy. How do you not miss a wallet with $3,400 in it?"

Miller called the Sheriff's Office a second time, and Cpl. Daniel Weaver arrived a few minutes later. The owner's identification was inside the wallet, and Weaver managed to track her down.

The owner lives in Orlando and traveled to Flagler County on vacation with her family. It was money the family was using for their vacation, according to the Sheriff's Office.

In less than two hours, Weaver met the family at a popular Flagler Beach restaurant and returned the wallet and its contents to her.

Miller, a construction worker, said he couldn't believe he found the wallet. "I could have really used that money. But, I believe in honesty and respecting other people's belongings — especially $3,400. And I'd want someone to do that for me."

Miller will be nominated by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office for an integrity award.
