A 17-year-old Marion County high school student was arrested Friday after deputies said he brought a shotgun onto school property.

  • Boy, 17, brought shotgun to North Marion High, deputies say
  • Student told deputies he forgot to take it out of his truck
  • No threats were made to harm anyone at school, deputies said

A resource officer at North Marion High School responded to the student parking lot, where he reported seeing a shotgun on the front passenger seat of the student's truck. The officer searched the vehicle and found 21 rounds of ammunition, deputies said.

The boy told deputies that he forgot to take the shotgun out of his truck.

Marion County Public Schools has a no tolerance policy for weapons on campus. ... Students who make bad choices like this can ultimately face expulsion from our school district. That decision is made by members of the Marion County School Board,” Superintendent George Tomyn said in a news release by the Sheriff's Office.

Added Sheriff Emery Gainey: “We encourage parents to speak with their children about gun safety and to be vigilant to make sure they do not bring weapons to schools.”

No threats have been made, nor was there any indication that the student intended to harm anyone at the school, deputies said.

The boy was taken to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Facility. He faces charges of bringing weapons on school property.
