It's called the Million Father March and today that parental show of support was at one Daytona Beach elementary school where fathers, and some mothers, were showing support to their children's education.

  • Fathers, mothers show support for their children's education at Westside Elementary School
  • State representative says it's a positive re-enforcement for students

Journey Smith will be putting his best foot forward this school year and his father is right there in step with him, showing his support for his son on this the first day of school at Westside Elementary School.

"Pretty exciting. Why? Because it's good to be here and walk," Smith said.

The Million Father March is a group effort brought to Westside Elementary School five years ago by a former Westside school principal.

The walk is only a few blocks, but Democratic State Rep. Dwayne Taylor says the positive re-enforcement students see from their parents is making great strides in the community.

"I see a who lot difference in the community. I see a difference in their school work, I see a difference in their attitude. And that’s what we're looking for is a positive response from them," Taylor said.

This group also received support from neighboring Bethune-Cookman University.

Smith says the effort is to show his son and other children they're not walking to school alone that an entire community supports them every step of the way.

"It’s excellent. Why? Because it makes me feel better," Smith said.
