A man was arrested on charges of setting his girlfriend on fire, South Daytona Beach police said.

  • The victim told police she and Redding were arguing
  • He threw rubbing alcohol on her and lit her on fire

Jerod Redding, 29, faces charges of aggravated battery, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.

Officers responded to a domestic battery call at 1761 Eastern Rd. According to police, Tanisha Carter and Redding began fighting and arguing. Carter’s four young children, ages 3 weeks to 5 years old, were at home at the time.

Police say Redding tossed rubbing alcohol on Carter and lit her on fire.  She was severely burned on her left arm, left shoulder, the left side of her chest and neck.

"She was burnt to the white meat, from all of her chest down her arm," said Jessica Jackson, a neighbor.  Carter ran to Jackson's home, pounded on the door and screamed for help.

"Just looking at her burnt up, knowing something happened, something tragic," Jackson added.

Carter was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for her injuries. At last check, she was llisted in stable condition.

Redding told officers it was an accident. He said he was rubbbing alcohol on Carter while lighting a cigarette at the same time.

When officers tried to arrest Redding he engaged in a physical fight with police and told them, “You will need to shoot me.”

Officers were able take Redding into custody. The officers suffered minor injuries, according to the news release.
