For Pinellas County delegate Susan McGrath, this week is not only about the red, white and blue, but also the colors of the rainbow flag.

“I am so proud of the Democratic Party for being inclusive,” she said.

It’s an inclusive process the people at the party’s LGBT caucus meeting got to hear more about Tuesday, something McGrath said is a step forward.

“Our platform clearly and firmly states our commitment to being fair and just and respectful for everyone. You look at the platform on the other side — it has never been more discriminatory. It has never been more exclusive,” she said.

McGrath said she got involved with the Democratic Party campaigning for President Barack Obama in 2008.

She knew something needed to be done for the LGBT community then — and it’s even more evident now, she said.

“What it boils down to is it’s really about hate or it’s about acceptance,” McGrath said. “We don’t need to look any farther back than the Pulse shooting recently to see that while we are becoming more inclusive, there are still parts of our country that still have views that exclude people and are dangerous.”

She says she’s hoping this election will help change that.
