Members of the Obama administration will look at how Orange County is preparing for Zika on Monday.

  • Federal, state officials to investigate mosquitoes that might have Zika virus
  • President promises governor $5.6 mill to fight Zika

It comes as federal and state officials investigate the possibility that mosquitoes with the virus have arrived in Florida.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell and U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy will tour Orange County Mosquito Control with Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

The county has hired additional workers and stepped up patrols to knock out mosquitoes.

Last week, President Barack Obama, in a phone call to Gov. Rick Scott, promised Florida an additional $5.6 million to fight Zika.

Federal leaders want to make sure the state is doing its best to combat mosquitoes capable of transmitting the virus.

Right now medical teams are evaluating two cases in South Florida where patients have contracted Zika, but didn’t travel out of the U.S.

If these cases are confirmed, it would mean mosquitoes carrying the virus have made it to the U.S.

All the other cases in Florida, 300 plus have been related to people visiting Latin America where they contracted Zika and then traveling back to Florida where their symptoms developed.
