Funeral services have been set for a Flagler county commissioner who died at the end of last week.

  • Service for Meeker will be at 10 a.m. Saturday
  • Former commissioner died Friday at 61 from cancer
  • Colleague says Meeker has big shoes to fill

The service for Frank Meeker will be held Saturday. A memorial with Meeker's pictures and flowers sits near the county commission chambers.

The 61-year-old battled cancer, but people who knew him said he never stopped fighting for those in Flagler County.

"He was never a man that could sit still and do nothing," said District 1 Commissioner Bill McGuire. "He always had to be researching something, studying something, talking to someone."

That's why hearing the news of Meeker's passing was so tough for McGuire, who also lost his wife to cancer this year.

"It crushed me," he said.

Not only did McGuire used to sit next to Meeker in City Council years ago, they were good friends outside of work and church members.

Meeker spent about six years with the city of Palm Coast and was serving as the District 2 county commissioner the last four years until he died Friday.

"Frank Meeker was a man who just put a lot (more) back into the community than he took out of it," McGuire said.

People in the community said Meeker had a passion for youth sports, water, and the fire department.

He also had many accolades and was dedicated to public service. But outside of the chambers he was a husband, a father, and a friend.

"I'm glad I got to know him and I'm glad we spent time together, and I'm going to miss him very much," McGuire said of Meeker.

The supervisor of elections said because Meeker's death is just shy of 28 months outside a new election, his seat in the chambers will have to be appointed by the governor.

His friends said those will be big shoes to fill.

"I don't think anybody's going to sit down on day one and fill Frank Meeker shoes," McGuire said. "But if they try hard and apply themselves and do their homework like Frank always did, they could grow into the job."

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Park view Baptist Church. His family is asking that residents make donations to the Children's Cancer Research Center, and other youth groups in lieu of flowers.
