Michael Collins is raising money to build a $45,000 statue honoring fallen officers at the new Orlando Police Headquarters. He is today’s Everyday Hero.

Covered in badges, Collins has earned the rank of Eagle Scout at 16 years old.

As part of his duties as an Eagle Scout, he has to take on a project that will benefit the community.

While many opt to plant gardens, install bike racks or provide other services to charities, Collins spends his weekends raising money for the construction of a bronze statue.

“The statue will go there and be a place where officers can walk out, have lunch,” Collins said.

This construction site is the future location for the Orlando Police Headquarters on Orange Blossom Trail.

But it’s not just any statue. Collins wants it to be a memorial honoring fallen officers.

“The Orlando Police Department has lost 14 fallen officers since its inception,” Collins said.

Collins posts about his project on social media and even made a video advertising his fundraising goal.

He needs to raise $45,000 by the end of this year.

The Orlando Police Department endorsed his project and Chief John Mina reached out to the teen to provide support.

“Immediately, I was like, 'this is a great idea.' Certainly, I’ll take time out of my day to meet with him for his project,” Mina said.

Collins has raised over $3,000 in the first month. With no doubt he will reach his goal, a special place for the statue has already been saved on the north side of the police headquarters.

“I have a little spot reserved in the park,” Collins said.

That’s where Collins said everyone will be able to see the life size replica of an officer kneeling.

“They’re out there every day, all day, protecting us, which is why I wanted to do something to thank them for all of the sacrifices that they make,” Collins said.
