A Tony Award-winning musical is taking the stage in Orlando to raise money for the LGBTQ community, in honor of the Pulse tragedy victims.

  • Concert version of musical "Fun Home" playing one night only
  • Proceeds to benefit Pulse shooting victims

“Fun Home” focuses on the relationship of lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel and her father, a closeted gay man.

“For communities that have been so under represented, I think that can be a very profound experience to see those characters at the center,” said Lisa Kron, the writer of the play.

Actor Michael Cerveris, who plays Alison's father Bruce, had the idea to bring a concert version of the broadway show to Orlando to benefit the victims of the Pulse tragedy.

“Even more importantly maybe then raising money, I think, is just showing up," said Cerveris. "Physically standing with the community here, listening to their stories, sharing this story.”

100 percent of the proceeds from the performance will go to support future efforts of Equality Florida, according to the Dr. Phillips Center website.

“I wanted it to not be one more piece of terrible news," said "Fun Home" director Sam Gold. "I wanted to get to know the people and the community that had such a terrible loss."

Actors taking part in the production say coming to see a musical like this one is like reaching out and recognizing people who are often underrepresented. Actress Judy Kuhn, who plays Alison’s mother Helen, said she was happy to be involved.

“It makes you feel a little less helpless and hopefully makes the people you are benefitting feel a little less alone and a little more supported,” said Kuhn.

But it’s the lesson behind this show that actors hope viewers will remember most.

“Living in truth is the only option," said actress Beth Malone, who plays Alison. “There is only positive good art moving forward and through the world.”

Following on the heels of the "Fun Home" performance is another event to support Pulse victims, “From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert for Orlando,” which hits the stage Monday night, June 25.
