Let's see what the weekend forecast looks like for Central Florida:

  • Slightly drier weekend
  • Heat index near 100

A line of heavy storms came across the interior of Central Florida Friday, producing damage in at least one area of Central Florida.

A heavy storm knocked down trees and power lines in the downtown area of Winter Garden Friday afternoon. Duke Energy says hundreds of people were without power. Hundreds were also without power in the Orlovista and Gotha areas, as well as the Stoneybook West area of Winter Garden.

It will remain muggy overnight while temperatures drop into the middle 70s under a partly cloudy sky.  Our chance for afternoon showers and storms drops to 30 percent through the weekend with temperatures topping out near 94.  The heat index will be pushing to near 100 both days.

A big area of high pressure over the central U.S. shifts east this weekend, bringing a round of drier air into the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere.   High temperatures will remain above normal with most topping out between 92 and 95 both Saturday and Sunday. Moisture will be increasing early next week due to the wind turning back out of the southeast.  As this happens, our chance for showers and storms will be increasing, bringing our chances up between 40 and 50 percent.  No tropical formation is expected through the next 5 days.

There is a bit of improvement in the surf department, with fair conditions this weekend. Wave heights will climb waist to stomach high, occasionally higher, with an east-southeast trade swell. The rip risk is forecast to remain moderate, so swim near a lifeguard stand.
