It's tempting to want to make a left turn at a busy intersection when you have a green light and you see even a small opening.

  • Left turns on from Partin Settlement Road onto US-192 is dangerous, says local driver
  • There is no left-turn signals on that road
  • Osceola County Road and Bridge says left-turn signals are to be added

But, when that turn is a lot longer than you initially expected, you are putting yourself and others at risk.

That's the problem Kent Miller from Kissimmee has, who writes in this week ...

"I'm concerned about drivers turning left from either direction on Partin Settlement Road onto Highway 192. Vehicles are tempted to beat other vehicles traveling through the intersection, even though cars turning left should yield to cars passing straight through the intersection. US-192 is quite wide here and many left turners feel they can easily make their turn before the cars passing straight through the intersection will hit them."

When News 13 met with him, Miller has serious reservations about making left hand turns from Partin Settlement Road onto US-192. His main issue with the intersection has to do with the fact that there is no left-turn arrow on the Partin Settlement side to get to US-192. And that left turn is deceptively wide.

"That gives people the perception that they can make that left turn without being hit by an on-coming car,” Miller said.

He claims he has seen countless amounts of near-misses and has to be on his toes not only when making that left turn, but also continuing straight on US-192 itself.

"And I know I'm real sensitive to it because I ride motorcycles also," he said. "And that's the worst kind of accident you can have as a motorcycle rider going straight through an intersection and have somebody making a left turn right in front of you like that."

Miller says the majority of the people who make mistakes there are usually not from the area coming from Saint Cloud or Brevard County further out east.

"Somebody who's not really focused when they go through the intersection? They could have an accident here and it would be a very serious one."

Miller claims that he wrote our Traffic Inbox in the first place because he says he has not been heard or recognized by local officials and not for lack of trying. He wants the light to include a green left turn arrow for drivers on Partin Settlement Road to get to US-192.

"I even wrote a letter about two months ago to Osceola County Roads and Bridges asking them to do that," said Miller. "I never got a response from them."

News 13 was able to reach out to Osceola County Road and Bridge last week and they informed us that the Florida Department of Transportation has a US-192 widening project underway and that protected left turn arrows are included as part of that project!
