Out-of-state vacationers were camping at Blue Springs State Park when five adult family members rented two canoes, Greg Workman of the Florida Fish & Wildlife (FWC) explained to News 13 in an email.

The five men went canoeing on the St. John River when those on one canoe experienced some difficulty and tipped over, putting two people in the water.

“One person was struggling when a family member started helping, it appeared to be too late and he couldn't,” Workman stated.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office and FWC worked together to find the body of the 24-year-old man.

Workman said that while everyone had the required safety equipment onboard the canoes, they did not wear their life jackets.
