Some Marion County residents are trying to stop a wastewater facility from being built near their homes.

  • Plant is going up near Belmar Estates, Tropicana Village
  • Residents concerned about the odor
  • Public hearing Tuesday

Residents in the Belmar Estates and Tropicana Village have put up signs on County Highway 484 in Belleview, protesting the nearby plant.

Timothy James says he's concerned about the odor the dewatering facility will produce, but the landowner says there won't be much to smell.

"One Hundred-Fifty households have signed our petition that we do not want that,” said James.

"There will be very little odor because it’s not a sewer plant. Everything's contained underground, it will have filtering systems,” said landowner Ronnie Sheffield.

Sheffield has applied for a special use permit that the Marion County Board of County Commissioners will consider in Tuesday’s public hearing.
