Three women and a boy were killed when their car crashed on Interstate 95 and submerged into a pond Friday morning, troopers said.

  • Troopers found luggage in submerged car

Troopers responded to the scene of "multiple fatalities" after the crash just after 8:30 a.m. on I-95 at mile marker 235, near Oak Hill, in Volusia County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a driver on the interstate reported seeing a 2016 Nissan four-door sedan traveling southbound leave the roadway and overturn into a pond.

In a 911 call, a person describes to dispatchers what he saw.

“Just all of a sudden from the fast lane, went into the... all the way across all three lanes, across the shoulder and off into the grass and on down the dirt road. But from the time he left the road from where he went into the fence, you know, it’s hundreds of feet. And no skid marks, nothing,” the 911 caller said.

“They said they thought the car was just slowly going over to the side of the road, possibly to just pull over, and then it just continued on down off the road and into the embankment,” FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.

The 27-year-old driver and two other women were wearing seatbelts — and a boy was in a cars eat — so investigators think the four survived the impact but died in the water.

The witness who spotted the car veer off the interstate tried to save the victims but couldn't.

"They weren’t able to reach the car. The car submerged quite quickly,” Montes said.

Troopers found luggage in the car, so they think the four victims were traveling through Central Florida or were on vacation.

“There was no abrupt movement; there was no speeding in their eyes. So really, it's a mystery right now as to why they left the road,” Montes said.

FHP is still working to notify family members of the victims of the crash, so they have not released the identities of the three women and young boy killed.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office assisted troopers in recovering the car and victims.
