Flagler Humane Society is now trying to find homes for the 25 dogs and nine cats they took in from an animal rescue Tuesday.

"The cats are super friendly loving cats the puppies of course everybody loves the puppies," said Amy Carotenuto with Flagler Humane Society.

After receiving reports of poor living conditions at the Saffari Animal Rescue, investigators searched the property Tuesday. However, they said they didn't find enough evidence to support those claims.

The rescue's owner decided to surrender some animals anyway.

Wednesday they were still getting checked in and cleaned up.

The animals that were brought in were vaccinated, heartworm tested, feline leukemia tested, de-wormed and de-fleaed.

It costs about $40 to spay and neuter the animals, so the Flagler Humane Society said taking in so many at one time can be expensive.

"You take a financial hit when you're doing something like this because it's obviously overtime for the staff," said Carotenuto.

The shelter pulled staff from their normal positions to help out with huge intake. But staff members said its worth it to give the pets the care they need.

The Humane Society is recommending larger cages, a new cleaning protocol, and better medical record keeping for the animals that remained with the owner. They plan to work with her over the next few weeks.

But for now, the plan is to get the dogs and cats a home.

"We'd like to get all of these guys adopted into loving homes. We do want to ensure that in cases like these, the facilities don't go out and get more animals and then we have to do this again," said Carotenuto.

This weekend there is a large pet adoption event scheduled in Jacksonville and the Flagler Humane Society will be there. The shelter said they are trying to make more room for the rescue animals they brought in from the rescue. We reached out to the owner for comment Wednesday and haven't heard back.
