A bicyclist was riding along County Road 25 in Marion County on Sunday night when a BMW struck and killed him, the Florida Highway Patrol stated.

Jackie Charles Ramsey, 36, was driving his 2007 BMW westbound on County Road 25 at around 9:37 p.m. when the front right of his vehicle hit Kirk Garland’s bicycle traveling the same direction on the road, according to FHP.

The Summerfield driver left the road and went onto a grassy shoulder where the back left of the BMW collided with a palm tree. The BMW then spun around in a counterclockwise direction on the shoulder and came to a rest, FHP stated.

The 39-year-old Garland, also from Summerfield, was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue, FHP reported.

Neither Ramsey nor his passenger were taken to the hospital.

It is not known if Garland was wearing a helmet.

The FHP stated it is trying to determine if alcohol played a part in the accident. Under Ramsey’s and Garland’s names listed in the police report, “pending” is placed under the alcohol category for both men.

Charges are pending, FHP reported.
