Temperatures hit the low 90’s this weekend and that summer humidity is setting in, but it hasn’t slowed down beachgoers which is why lifeguards are keeping an eye out for heat related injuries.

  • Lifeguards advise hydration, avoiding soft drinks and too much alcohol
  • Warnings on condition boards on lifeguard stands constantly updated

“[W]hen we start to get into the 90’s and that high humidity, that’s when we start to worry about beach patrons and their ability to cool themselves,” Brevard County Lifeguard Chief Eisen Witcher said.

On days like these, lifeguards stress the need to hydrate before, during, and after leaving the beach. What they say is key is remembering the importance of water, and thus avoiding soft drinks and too much alcohol.

“We really try to put out as many warnings as possible on our condition boards if we feel like there is going to be an issue with heat related injuries,” said Witcher.

Those condition boards are constantly being updated and can be found on all lifeguard stands.

Residents and visitors planning to be out on the beach as the heat continues this week should also remember to pack sunscreen and beach umbrellas

“If you are going to come out on a hot day like this, just remember to stay hydrated and take the steps to stay protected,” Witcher said.

The heat and humidity is expected to last at least through the next few days.
