A pedestrian was hit and killed Wednesday night on U.S.-1 in Brevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Fay Boulevard and U.S.-1.

Hurshell Cordell, 72, of Cocoa, was attempting to cross U.S.-1 when he was struck by a 2001 Ford four-door vehicle which fled the scene, troopers said. Cordell died at the scene.

Sometime later, the owner of the vehicle contacted FHP to report the vehicle has been in some type of crash, Sergeant Kim Montes said.  The vehicle was brought back to the scene and had damage consistent with hitting a person.

The owner of the vehicle is being cooperative with investigators.  The driver has not been identified.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
