Almost 600 jellyfish stings were reported along Volusia County beaches during the past week, officials said.

  • Hundreds of jellyfish stings reported in Volusia
  • Seek out lifeguard immediately if you're stung

“All sting victims were treated and released on scene. There were no major medical issues,” said Senior Capt. Tammy Marris of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

The presence of jellyfish can vary throughout the year. However, the wind speeds and water currents play a factor in their sightings.

Some precautions you can take to avoid a jellyfish encounter are:

  • Always swim in front of or near a life guard
  • Avoid swimming in areas where jellyfish have been reported
  • Be aware of tides and beach condition flags
  • Purple flags signal hazardous marine life

Volusia Ocean Rescue officials advise those stung to seek out a lifeguard immediately. Lifeguards treat the stings with white vinegar.
