If you’re traveling to and from the Orlando International Airport, you’ll notice some big changes to your route.
- New southbound route to State Road 417 opens June 8
- Part of plans for new South Terminal Complex at Orlando International Airport
- New northbound lanes to be completed by the end of the year
Starting June 8, a new southbound route from the airport to State Road 417 will be in place, taking drivers over a bridge which passes some major construction near the main terminals.
"This bridge was kind of key to getting the traveling public going south and the three rail systems going in from the north so they can interact properly,” said Mike Patterson, director of construction for Orlando International Airport.
The airport is not only building a new South Terminal, with a new parking garage, but they are also installing rail lines for their new people movers.
The rail lines serve another purpose as well. Local leaders in Orange County are still hoping to have SunRail head towards the airport.
Airport officials also anticipate All Aboard Florida available in the years to come, with its line traveling to and from Miami.
This part of the project will cost just about $3 million with a small portion coming from Florida Dept. of Transportation.
Following the grand opening of the southbound lanes, construction will begin on installing new northbound lanes as well. That construction on those new lanes is slated to be complete by the end of this year.
“This is really step one in getting the traveling public both to and from the new future South Terminal Complex,” Patterson explained.
