  • Unclear whether Napoli died from self-inflicted gunshot wound

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office's Major Crimes detectives requested assistance from patrol to locate Joseph Napoli for questioning in a case they were working.

Around 4:35 p.m., a female deputy located Napoli's vehicle pulled over on the side of the road near 15990 N.E. 160th Avenue Road in Hog Valley, deputies said.

The deputy parked behind the man's vehicle, exited the patrol car and began to approach Napoli's vehicle. The deputy noticed Napoli had a handgun as she walked up to the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy stated Napoli raised his gun and she discharged her weapon. It's believed that Napoli simultaneously discharged his weapon, as well.

Napoli was pronounced dead at the scene. It's undetermined if his wound was self-inflicted, deputies said.

The deputy wasn't injured in the incident. Her name hasn't been released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, which is agency policy.
