SunRail is facing yet another delay for the planned expansion to DeLand in Volusia County.

  • SunRail managers pulled a grant application to pay for the DeLand expansion
  • FDOT says a new funding source for the DeLand SunRail expansion is needed

Congressman John Mica, R-Winter Park, said the project's planners pulled an application for a federal TIGER Grant that could've been used to help fund the rail extension.

SunRail wanted the federal government grant to pay for 50 percent of the project, with the other 50 percent coming from state and local funding.

This could mean another big delay for the 12-mile expansion. Riders tonight have mixed reactions.

“It’s still worth it to drive from DeLand to DeBary," said SunRail rider Karen Moss. "It’d be nice in Deland but I think it’s kind of far out from the central downtown."

“I take it from DBbary to Church Street so it doesn’t affect me," said SunRail rider Ashley Fillmore. "I live two minutes from here.”

Steve Olson with the Florida Department of Transportation says withdrawing the grant application means they will have to find a new funding source.
