A body found in the ocean at Daytona Beach on Tuesday morning was that of a Canadian swimmer who disappeared a day before, beach officials say.

Volusia County authorities say an off-duty Sheriff's deputy from New York state pulled the body to shore Tuesday morning. Fire rescue personnel arrived a short time later and pronounced the man dead. Volusia County Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue officers identified the man as Russell Cates, 24, of Oshawa, Ontario.

On Monday, beach safety officials received reports that a Canadian tourist went under water in Daytona Beach and did not surface.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine a cause of death.
