On Saturday nearly a hundred people in Palm Bay started their holiday weekend by gathering to welcome two veterans and their families into new homes.

  • Both families selected to receive homes as part of “Homes for Warriors” foundation
  • Foundation has so far helped six families move into new homes

Family, friends and veterans cheered as the Davidson and Krysak families got to see their finished homes for the first time.

Veteran Eric Davidson says the stability of their new situation is a positive step for his family.

"To be in one place and have a network of other veterans who support veterans has been good," said Davidson.

But on this particular Memorial Day weekend, Davidson says his fellow soldiers are the ones on his and his family’s minds.

“Today I’m thinking about them," said Davidson. "They paid the price with their lives, so I could come here and reap a benefit that they paid for with their lives, so it is kind of overwhelming.“

Both families were selected to receive these homes as part of the “Homes for Warriors” program. Homes for Warriors is a joint effort between the City of Palm Bay and the area non-profit Space Coast Paratroopers Association.

The program works closely with community volunteers and local businesses who offer donations and free supplies to give veterans in need a chance to start again.

"There is nothing better than being able to pay it forward to this younger generation of wounded warriors,” said Homes for Warriors Project Coordinator Donald Overton. "It means the world to me to know that we’re going to be able to help them transition all the way back home after their military service."

So far, the Homes for Warriors program has helped six families move into new homes. They currently have house number seven under construction, and later this month they’ll begin work on selecting another four veterans.

“We’re going to settle into our new home, unpack and then get started working on the next home,” said Davidson. “We are so stoked about getting to be a part of the community.“
