An area of low pressure currently about 288 miles east of Cape Canaveral has become Tropical Depression 2.

The system is projected to become a named tropical storm overnight or on Saturday.

  • Low pressure system becomes Tropical Depression 2
  • TD 2 heading toward Carolinas
  • Won't have direct impact on Florida

Located at 29.0N/75.9W, the depression is currently moving west-northwest at 12 mph and is still forecast to track into the South Carolina coastline over the holiday weekend. If you have friends and family from Charleston, South Carolina, to Wilmington, North Carolina, give them a head's up they will have direct impacts from this storm.

Current indications take Tropical Depression 2 quickly toward the South Carolina coastline by Saturday night, likely as Tropical Storm Bonnie, then into North Carolina and Virginia through Memorial Day.

This storm will not directly impact Florida. Indirect impacts will be quite noticeable for those of you with beach plans this weekend. Expect a high, rough surf and off-shore waves climbing quickly. We’re also expecting a long-shore flow and high rip current threat from Saturday through Memorial Day. Pay attention to lifeguard stands and be prepared to be asked to stay out of the water. Shower and storm chances are at 30 percent over the weekend thanks to dry air being pulled in around Bonnie. The heat and humidity builds, with muggy highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s.
