A 19-year-old Daytona man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in state prison after a jury found him guilty of two felony charges related to a carjacking attempt last summer, the State Attorney’s Office said.

  • Prosecutors were able to have him sentenced as a repeat offender
  • Because of his previous criminal history, Deandrew Hughley was sentenced to 30 years in prison

A Volusia County jury convicted Hughley on two felony charges on Wednesday, March 09. Prosecutors were able to have Deandrew Hughley sentenced as a prison release reoffender, which requires a 30-year prison sentence. His prior criminal history includes six prior felony convictions, including one carjacking and four burglaries.

Authorities say that on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, Hughley tried to steal Booker Williams’ 2006 silver Hyundai as the owner unlocked his car and put his keys inside before turning to speak with someone. That is when Hughley jumped into the car and started it, officials said.

But authorities say that Williams and his acquaintance started to punch Hughley and told him to get out of the car.

“Hughley put his hand into his shirt and threatened to use a firearm on Williams,” the State Attorney’s Office said. “Eventually, Hughley fled the area while Booker reached for his own gun, firing one round at Hughley, missing him.”

Hughley dropped his firearm and ran, but Daytona Beach Police officers were able to capture him.
