Port Canaveral Coast Guard officials kicked off National Boating Safety Week with Memorial Day Weekend, one of the busiest boating weekends of the year, firmly in mind.

  • Wear life vests
  • Check gear and update equipment

We caught up with Joe and his wife Kelley, who have been boat owners for more than 40 years. They have 2 inflatable life boats on board, GPS tracking devices, and a two way radio, but one safety item stands above the rest

“Extra life jackets are a must,” Kelley said, “If you have children or grandchildren like we do, we always have extra life jackets.“

The Port Canaveral Coast Guard would like to see this level of safety from everyone. Just last year, more than half of the 55 cases of boating related deaths were directly related to the victim not wearing a life vest.

“That just goes to show no matter how experienced you are, you need to be taking these safety precautions,“ said Port Canaveral Coast Guard Petty Officer Justin Dadlani.

Area residents and visitors planning to be out on the water this weekend should also check all gear and update any old or broken equipment, just as you would your car before heading out on the road.

Joe and Kelley say It could end up making all the difference.

“If you have all these safety features, you can help others, and that’s what it’s all about, being safe on the water, having a good time, and helping others,” Kelley said.

The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know about a new app available for their safety on the water. It allows users to send location information and boating plans to friends, family, and even the Coast Guard.

To download the app, visit the Apple or Andriod app store and search "US National Coast Guard."
