A search is underway for a man police say fired shots, assaulted a neighbor and barricaded himself inside a Melbourne home.

  • Man fired shots outside home Thursday evening
  • Police say Brian Griggs fled to Palm Bay, returned to Melbourne and barricaded himself
  • Police entered home but didn't find Griggs inside

It started around 6 p.m. when police say Brian Griggs fired shots in the air outside a home before fleeing the area near Edwards Street.  He then lead police on a chase.

Hours later, Palm Bay police found Griggs' car in Palm Bay.  They pursued him back to Melbourne, where Melbourne police picked up the pursuit.  Police said Griggs then barricaded himself inside a house.

Early Friday morning, negotiators were dispatched to home to try and talk the man into leaving the house.

Police fired a non-lethal chemical agent into the home. When police searched the house, the man was not inside, police said.

Two people were inside the home around 9 p.m. Thursday, but they were able to run outside through the back. They told police Griggs was still inside.

The neighborhood is still blocked off. Four homes next to the suspect's were evacuated.

Griggs is wanted for aggravated assault, according to police.
