Robert Roy Schwamberger, 81, and Ruth Amelia Schwamberger, 77, were the victims of a double homicide, Ocala Police said Monday.

Officers responded at about 8:09 a.m. Sunday to 544 NE 43rd Ave. after concerned neighbors called police to check on the couple. When officers arrived, they found the couple dead. After further investigation, detectives upgraded the incident to a double homicide.

Although the bodies were found Sunday, crime scene investigators remained on scene well into Monday night.

For much of the day detectives could be seen removing several items from the house including a wooden door. Neighbors say it’s a very quiet area and can’t believe a double murder could happen where they live.

“[I’m] dumbfounded, devastated, I couldn’t believe it. It’s really something you wouldn’t expect to happen around here,” said Miles Dunlap, who lives across the street.

Police are not releasing any information on whether they think the couple was robbed or whether their home had been broken into.

The crime is an ongoing investigation, and detectives are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ocala Police Department at 352-369-7000 or Crime Stoppers of Marion County at 368-STOP (7867).
