A suspected drunk driver struck a medical helicopter early Wednesday morning as it was responding to a crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The incident happened just after 2 a.m. on U.S. Highway 192, near State Road 429.
The chopper was called to the scene of a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian. According to troopers, the helicopter landed on the roadway and a driver went through a roadblock, hitting the tail of the chopper.
The helicopter was damaged at the rear roter and had to be towed away.
FHP said that the pedestrian who was injured in the initial crash was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The driver who hit the helicopter was identified as Cameron Sunderly, 20 of Clermont. According to the crash report, troopers could smell alcohol on his breath. Troopers had him perform a field sobriety test.
Sunderly was arrested and charged with DUI. He was taken to the Orange County Jail.
Both crashes remain under investigation.
