A missing 2-year-old girl found in a canal after a law-enforcement search died Tuesday afternoon, Lake County deputies said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence on State Road 19 in Groveland at about 1:11 p.m. about a missing 2-year-old.

While they were en route, they were told that a friend's parents were watching the girl, and when they went to check on her, she was not in her bed.

Family members, deputies — including a K-9 bloodhound unit and a helicopter — and Groveland Police officers searched for the toddler, identified as Alexa Escuders.

She was found about 50 yards from the home, submerged in a canal. Responders initiated CPR and took her to South Lake Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing, and no more details have been released.
