Brevard County officials will meet Wednesday to organize a cleanup event for the Indian River Lagoon shoreline and other areas littered with thousands of dead fish.

The county is looking for volunteers to help with the cleanup.

Officials say initial findings show an algae bloom generated by warm conditions and high nutrients in the lagoon caused the latest fish kill.

The majority of the dead fish were found on privately owned property and marinas.

The county will meet with volunteers Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the county government center in Viera. Officials will also meet with the St. Johns River Waterway Management, Florida Fish and Wildlife, the county’s sheriff’s office and parks and recreation, and other agencies.

Locations for the cleanup will be finalized at the meeting. Dumpsters will be put out at several waterfront parks to collect the dead fish and dispose of them.
