Two spring breakers were arrested Friday after they stole a Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Jet Ski and went around on a joy ride before beaching the personal watercraft and trying to run from authorities.

Capt. Tammy Marris, of Volusia County Beach Safety, said the incident happened just before 5 p.m.

The agency's Jet Ski attendant was having some mechanical issues and beached the personal watercraft along the sand in Daytona Beach.

Minutes later, two spring breakers hopped on the Jet Ski and proceeded to ride it south around the Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Pier.

Officers were able to follow the duo on land along the shoreline. The two then beached the ski south of the pier and tried to run away from the area, Marris said.

Officers were able to secure the two, who have been identified as James D. Duffey, 22, and Andrew A. Gentry, 21, both of Virginia.

Marris said they will be charged with grand theft of a vessel.
