It's not uncommon this time of year to see race fans at the Daytona International Speedway burn wood to try to stay warm.

With that in mind, the Florida Forest Service is warning race fans about fire dangers. They have issued an alert for Volusia County calling for the fire danger to be high because of high winds and low humidity.

That warning has race fans taking the necessary precautions when it comes to fires in the parking lots.

Marty Christie from North Florida has made an annual tradition out of camping outside the Speedway before the races start since 1984. He's brought a truckload of firewood to burn on cold days and says he will probably go through two more truckloads before the Daytona 500.

But his wood burning raises eyebrows with area fire departments, like Volusia Fire Service and the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

"We suggest [fans] use an approved fire pit and they monitor it at all times and use caution when using it," said Sasha Staton, from the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

Christie's answer to that suggestion? The same device he's used every year during the winter races when temperatures drop below 50 degrees: a fire drum that he can put a screen over.

"That's to keep embers from blowing anywhere, catching grass on fire, or something or burning somebody else's stuff up," said Christie.

Christie says he can hardly wait for the summer races - that's when he brings a Jacuzzi.
