SpaceX is targeting a Feb. 24 launch of a Falcon 9 rocket and European communications satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The launch window will open at 6:46 p.m. EST, the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base said Friday on its Twitter feed. A backup launch date has been set for Feb. 25.

SpaceX is currently completing a series of tests and pre-flight validations ahead of the SES-9 launch.

Once in orbit, the SES-9 satellite will be used to deliver reliable data connectivity to millions of homes across Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines. It will also provide dedicated beams to support the growing mobile communications needs across the Indian Ocean, according to a news release.

The mission has been delayed since late last year. SpaceX has modified the mission to ensure the satellite reaches its orbital slot. Luxembourg-based SES owns the SES-9 satellite.

The launch will be the first by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral since Dec. 21, when the company successfully landed the first stage of its rocket on the ground.

SpaceX wants to reduce the costs of launches by reusing rockets.
