Two people were arrested Tuesday after a toddler accidentally shot herself in the hand, according to Sanford Police.

Officers were called to Central Florida Regional Hospital in reference to a child who had a gunshot wound.

When they arrived, they made contact with Devolia Sims and Aaron Davis, the child’s parents.

Sims told investigators that she arrived at Davis’ residence, and a short time later, she heard a gunshot. Sims then saw the child bleeding from her right hand, investigators said.

Sims told investigators that the child was left inside the garage unattended. Investigators said during the interview that Sims changed her story several times, at one point saying she was with the child in the garage.

She refused to tell investigators who the gun belonged to or what happened to the gun after it was fired.

Investigators went to the residence and found several magazines and ammunition in plain view in the garage that were easily assessable to a child.

Sims and Davis were arrested and charged with child neglect and unsafe storage of a firearm.
