Melbourne police are investigating the death of a teacher who was a finalist for the 2016 Teacher of the Year in Brevard County.

The body of Sandra Cook, a math teacher at Rockledge High School, was found by officers at about 10:45 a.m. Monday in a home on Chapparal Drive, where they'd gone to investigate a call about a suspicious death.

According to police, Cook had not shown up for work, and the school notified a family member, who went to her home to check on her. The family member found Cook and Ricky Wayne Cook, her estranged husband, dead in the home of gunshot wounds and called authorities.

The couple were going through a divorce, and Ricky Cook had moved out about a month ago, police said. Investigators think Ricky Cook broke into the Chapparal Drive home on Sunday night and attacked Sandra.

Bill Chernault, who lives nearby, said the Cooks were "pretty quiet neighbors."

"They haven't been here that long," Chernault said. "They've been here may two years and weren’t the kind that really would come out and talk to you and have a beer or barbecue. They were just kind of standoffish."

Sandra Cook was one of six finalists for Brevard's 2016 Teacher of the Year award.

No one else is thought to be involved in their deaths, police said.
