A man and woman have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a dialysis center employee in the parking lot of a West Colonial Drive strip mall last week, Orange County detectives said Wednesday.

Kenny L. Chaney, 23, of Orlando, has been charged with first degree murder with a firearm, deputies said. His girlfriend, April Elise Coger, 24, also of Orlando, faces armed robbery charges.

On Friday, a male employee of Fresenius Medical Care West Orlando Dialysis Center was shot as he walked in the parking lot of the strip mall at 5600 West Colonial Drive, where the facility is located. Gregory Whitbeck, 55, was taken to Health Central hospital in Ocoee, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff's Office affidavits for the couple said they had held up two other people near the shopping center before targeting Whitbeck. Property belonging to those people were found in Coger's residence, detectives said.

Surveillance video, witnesses and the GPS the dealership put on her new car linked the couple to the three violent crimes that happened within two hours Friday morning.

Minutes before the shooting, the second robbery happened just outside the door of a nearby day care. The victim was taking her three-month-old into day care at the time.

According to the manager, the victim had the door open after being buzzed in, but she shut the door to lock it so the man holding her at gunpoint could not get inside with the kids. She said she can now sleep at night knowing there was an arrest.

"The victims in the robberies played a pivotal role in identifying these individuals," said Sheriff Jerry Demings at a press conference Wednesday.

Both Chaney and Coger are being held on no bond.
