After more than 45 years on the job, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson officially announced his retirement.

The sheriff attended his final commission meeting on Tuesday. He handed out awards to staff members.

Then, holding back tears he addressed the large group of supporters who came to be a part of his final meeting. The sheriff was congratulated by his staff who had his service weapon retired and framed.

The sheriff says it will be difficult to see news stories about his department, knowing he will no longer be a part of them.

"You know it's hard to walk away, but it's time. I always made the joke I wanted to leave the term before the people wanted me to and I hope I made it," Johnson said.

He officially leaves office on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016.
