As new details emerge in the Rockledge Police-involved shooting that put a 17-year-old in the hospital emerge, a key question remains -- Did the suspects in the incident that led to the shooting have a gun?

  • Police told stolen gun inside suspects' car
  • Search warrant obtained for car
  • Investigators have not found a gun

Rockledge Police said Saturday morning they have obtained a search warrant for the suspects' vehicle, which was used Thursday night in an attempt to escape police.

That is key because police have been told there is a stolen gun inside that car.

Currently, however, investigators have not found a gun. Officials said they don't believe investigators will execute that search warrant until at least sometime Monday.

Body cam footage released by Rockledge Police shows officers repeatedly telling the 17-year-old suspect to stay on the ground after the 15-year-old had fled the scene, all prior to one of the officers firing his weapon.

Residents react

Police were initially called to the area of Hawk and Cogswell Street Thursday night after receiving reports of two teens, aged 15 and 17, breaking into cars.

Upon officers arrival to the scene, the incident escalated quickly. Police said the suspects were driving a white sedan and almost hit officers before ramming a squad car.

Residents of the area, meanwhile, are still trying to comprehend just what happened outside their doors Thursday and what it means for their neighborhood.

"I think we should always be vigilant, all of us,” said resident Lynne Grace just a day after the shooting.

"Its kind of scary,” said another neighbor, Tharwat Abraham. “It's like you can't believe little kids like that are going from house to house, breaking into cars like that."

The 17-year-old is in stable condition and remains in the hospital. The other suspect, Anthony Pierre, 15, was taken into custody a few hours later.

Neighbors also said that while nothing like this has happened here before, they feel the violence is becoming all too common.

"It's very sad," said Grace. "It's sad for their families, our families, it's sad for the police, but the police do need to protect themselves and we really need to protect our police and be grateful. We have a great police department here in Rockledge, fantastic.”

Charged as an adult

Pierre has been charged as an adult with felony grand theft and assault on a law enforcement officer, as well as leaving the scene of an accident.

The 17-year-old has not been formally charged, but investigators tell us he will likely face less serious charges, since he was the passenger.

Meanwhile, FDLE is handling the officer-involved shooting part of the investigation.
