The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is warning drivers about a new email scam.

  • Emails claim to be collecting traffic citation fees
  • DHSMV says it's a scam; they do not email citations
  • Call your local Clerk of Courts or the DHSMV if you get this email

DHSMV says someone claiming to be from a company is sending out emails requesting payment for a citation within a certain timeframe.

If payment is not received on time, the so-called company will demand a daily late fee payment.

The email includes a link to a payment page, which the DHSMV says appears to be inactive right now.

If you have received this email and made a payment, refute the charge with your bank or credit union.

DHSMV says neither the department, nor any county Clerk of Courts office in Florida, emails citations to customers. They also do not require payment for citations over email.

If you receive a notice regarding a suspicious citation, contact your local Clerk of Courts office or the DHSMV immediately.

DHSMV has a customer service number, at 850-617-2000. The customer service center is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
