Phyllis Thrush was sitting on a swing outside her Deltona senior living facility, enjoying the cool weather Thursday, when a squirrel suddenly jumped on her arm.

But this one wasn't friendly.

  • Woman was attacked outside, then ran inside, pursued by squirrel
  • Rodent bit 2 more people inside before making getaway

The squirrel bit her arm, crawled to her chest and eventually got onto her head.

“I was trying to get rid of him. And I have 11 incisions on this arm from it,” said Thrush, as she held out her arm.

But the attack didn’t end with her.

She ran into the Sterling Court Gracious Retirement Living facility — with the squirrel right on her tail.

Thrush said Friday that the rodent then attacked another resident and a worker at the facility.

“One lady had a bite on her forehead, another lady on her arm. So we all got it. Same squirrel,” Thrush said.

A spokesperson for the facility confirmed the attack and said no one was seriously hurt.

Thrush was taken to a hospital where she was treated, bandaged and released.

The Health Department is investigating but said squirrels don't normally carry rabies.

“Not with squirrels, or rats, or any of that — they don’t carry rabies. So I didn’t have to have a (rabies) shot,” Thrush said.

The attacker fled and got away, and finding it may be hard.

“I was scared to death,” she said with a giggle.
