Central Florida local election highlights

There are many Central Florida races and issues that will be gracing the ballots this election.

Below are just some of the highlights that voters will want to keep an eye on.

Brevard County

Henry U. Parrish III has been Cocoa's mayor since November 2012. Some of the issues that he is concerned about, according to the city's page, is the negative image Cocoa has when it comes to crime and a lack of economic development.

The incumbent's challenger is Dontavious "Tay" Smith, who according to his campaign site, is representing everyone, from conservatives to liberals, to the rich and poor and the everything category you can think of.

However, it is not Smith's first attempt to run for mayor. According to Smith, he tried to run for mayor in 2008 after graduating from Florida A&M University that same year.

As Cocoa Beach's Mayor Tim Tumulty is stepping down, two others are looking to take his place. Adrianne Dillion and Ben Malik are both trying to win the mayor's seat.

Dillion was a Cocoa Beach City commissioner twice, from 1996 to 1997 and again from 2012 to 2014, while Malik is a vice president and commercial banker for Florida Bank of Commerce.

Melbourne is another town with a big race, but this one has three challengers. Mayor Kathy Meehan is fighting to keep her seat against Dr. Hazel Buggs and Mike Nowlin, who is currently serving his eighth year as District 1 representative on the Melbourne City Council.

When Titusville Mayor Jim Tulley announced last year that he would not seek a third term, former Brevard School Board member Robert Jordan declared that he was running for the seat.  Jordan is facing off against Vice Mayor Walt Johnson for the position.

Flagler County

For most partisan races on the ballot, you'll see a Democratic challenger facing off against a Republican opponent, but sometimes members of the same party are the ones to watch out for.

That was the case for incumbent Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre, who lost an August primary election battle to fellow Democrat Larry Jones.

Jones, who has a long history in law enforcement, is running against Republican challenger Rick Staly, who also has an extended career as a law enforcement officer.

Lake County

Peyton Grinnell, who has been with the county's sheriff's office since 1994, is making a run for sheriff. So is Chuck Broadway, who started his career with the New York City Police Department 20 years ago.

A big issue on the ballot this year is the North Lake Hospital referendum, which voters will decide on Tuesday. The referendum is designed to provide tax dollars to, in part, help cover the cost of clinics for the care of needy people who do not have health insurance.

Marion County

The Marion County Sheriff's race started with controversy when Chris Blair was indicted by a grand jury amid an excessive force investigation and resigned from his position as sheriff. As part of the plea deal, Blair could not run for re-election as sheriff.

Voters can now choose between Democrat Dennis McFatten and Republican William "Billy" Woods, both with long careers in law enforcement. Woods and McFatten will not just have to race against each other, but outrace the shadow of the controversy.

Orange County

Democrat incumbent Jerry Demings is fighting to keep his seat as Orange County sheriff against his Republican challenger Spike Hopkins.

Usually, a position like a county property appraiser doesn't cause much excitement in a political race, but there was some controversy for Rick Singh. In 2015, Republican Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and other county leaders raised questions about the Democratic incumbent's spending following media reports.

However, the county's comptroller cleared Singh and his office of any wrongdoing.

Not only does Singh have to deal with accusations, but he has to also focus against his rivals, Republican Edward DeAguilera and write-in candidate Christopher Casler.

Most political junkies wouldn’t eye a race for Soil and Water Group 1, but in addition to Michael Barber and Maria Bolton-Joubert running, there is also 18-year-old Star Grayson as a candidate.

She happens to be the daughter of Alan Grayson, who lost to Patrick Murphy for the Democratic ticket in the U.S. Senate race.

And her new stepmother, Dena Grayson, was defeated in the Democratic primary race for Florida's 9th congressional district.

Osceola County

St. Cloud Council Deputy Mayor Jeff Rinehart is hoping to win the mayor's seat, but he has to beat Nathan Blackwell to do it.

Blackwell faced some opposition when some people were upset that his Cornerstone Church, where he is a senior pastor and founder, was going to be a polling place.

However, the supervisor of elections told News 13 in August that there were no other places that could accommodate the number of voters assigned to his church.

The race for the Clerk of the Court has candidates who have faced controversy.

Armando Ramirez, the Democratic incumbent, fired staff when he got his position three years ago, but also hired his son's girlfriend as his personal assistant and gave Jennifer Soto a $20,000 raise. Her salary went from $95,000 to $115,000.

Malcom Thompson, who is a non-party affiliation candidate, simply wants his old job back as the county's Clerk of the Court.

However, in 2012 Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order to suspend Thompson after he was accused of shoving a secretary and assaulting another employee.

Seminole County

Many people are eyeing the Oviedo Referendum, which proposes the construction of a modern police station and to renovate the current Public Safety Complex.

Sumter County

South Sumter High School Principal Preston Morgan, a non-party affiliation candidate, is hoping to unseat Republican incumbent Richard Shirley for the title of Superintendent of Schools.

And Paul Remis is trying to oust Kelly Ann Williams as Webster mayor.

Volusia County

The county has two mayor's races, one in Orange City and the other in Port Orange.

Vice Mayor Gary Blair and council member Michael Wright are fighting for the top seat in Orange City.

Meanwhile, Don Burnett, who is on Port Orange's City Council District 2 seat, is hoping to become the city mayor.

Burnett is running against Ted Noftall, who was a public accountant in Canada before becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. Noftall has owned and operated J&M Moving & Storage in Oak Heights Industrial subdivision for 18 years.
