Flagler Beach police recently kicked off their Toys for Tickets program and they're already racking up gifts for the holiday season.

  • Toys for Tickets program in Flagler Beach
  • Drivers donate a toy in lieu of fine
  • Toys go to Christmas Come True

This is how it works -- those who receive a warning citation, traffic or parking offense have the opportunity to donate a toy in lieu of paying a fine.

Officers give a driver a toy waiver instead at their discretion.

Last year in five weeks the police gave out 101 warnings and received toys in exchange.

All donations go to Christmas Come True, which gives hundreds of gifts to the less fortunate children across the county every Christmas.

"At the end of the day, the officers are doing their jobs. They're giving people a break during the holidays and this is going to make some little boy or girl extremely happy on Christmas Day, when they're going to open up something they probably wouldn't have had," said Captain Matt Doughney with Flagler Beach Police.

Currently the department is in the second week of the initiative and officers have written 98 citations.

It is voluntary and they don't ask violators for their warning citation when the come in to drop off the toy at the police department.
