The search is on for several suspects wanted for shooting a man after trying to steal his car in Orange County.

Not only are neighbors are on edge but nearby schools were on lockdown Tuesday morning.

  • Dr. Phillips High, others locked down as deputies conducted search
  • Schools' lockdown has been lifted
  • Officials said 2 alleged carjackers tried to steal resident's vehicle
  • Resident was shot but in stable condition at hospital

The incident happened just before 8 a.m. on the 7400 block of Megan Elissa Lane, near Dr. Phillips High School.

Deputies said the victim confronted two people who were stealing his car. Moments later he was shot in the head and shoulder.

"Boom, boom. You know two shots. Boom. Boom," said Dora Muffi, who lives near the crime scene.

The Sand Pines Estates is a quiet subdivision in Dr. Phillips where homeowners know their neighbors.

"Wonderful guy. He has three children. He's a wonderful man. They've lived there actually before me, probably 20 some years," Muffi continued.

Deputies and neighbors who comforted the victim said the man is going to be OK.

"We went outside and covered him up with my Steeler blanket and some towels. That's it," Muffi explained.

However the suspects, who ended up ditching the stolen car for another getaway vehicle, are facing several felonies.

"Carjacking, burglary to a vehicle, grand theft auto, aggravated battery with a firearm. So multiple crimes took place in this one particular incident," said Jeff Williamson, a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Dr. Phillips High School, Dr. Phillips Elementary, Palm Lake Elementary and Southwest Middle Schools were all briefly on lockdown because of the incident.

All those lockdowns were lifted Tuesday morning.

Investigators are searching for up to four suspects. If you have any information, call CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS(8477).
