Love it or hate it, candy corn has been staple of fall and Halloween since the late 19th century.

In fact, behind chocolate, it's the favorite Halloween treat, according to the National Confectioners Association. About 9 billion kernels of candy corn are sold each year.

To celebrate National Candy Corn Day, here are a few fun facts about the candy:

  • Invented in the 1880s by George Renninger
  • A single piece of candy corn contains about seven calories
  • Majority of people eat a whole piece of candy corn at once, while other start with the white end
  • Candy makers also have candy corn for other holidays including Christmas and Valentine’s Day

However, not everyone is a fan of the tri-colored treat. Many people don’t like the taste or the way it looks.
