Families and foundations in Central Florida are reaching out to loved ones in the path of Hurricane Matthew.

New Missions is a foundation that provides aid to Haiti, and it currently has hundreds of people on the ground who are concerned the storm could devastate the country overnight.

On Monday, the mission prepared boxes of supplies for the relief efforts for whatever devastation the country may face.

For more than 30 years, New Missions has been on the ground in Haiti, building schools and helping the community. The foundation had people there during and after the earthquake in 2010.

New Missions President Tim DeTellis' brother is in Haiti waiting out the storm.

With Hurricane Matthew expected to drop up to 4 feet of rain in some parts of the island, DeTellis said all he can do now is pray and pack special "shoeboxes" for the kids that attend their schools.

"They open it up and see, wow, there are school supplies and flip flops and a water bottle," DeTellis said. "After a storm comes and wreaks havoc on their homes, this is a gift that is really worth giving."

The foundation is hoping all of the students and families survive the storm.

"It's easy to think that the problem isn't yours because the problem didn't come to your front door, but these are real people," DeTellis said. "And I look at a child who is full of potential and what moves me is that this shoebox gives them an ability to live a better life."

New Missions is hoping to pack enough boxes with supplies to fill a cargo unit to send to Haiti within the month.
