Latino groups in Central Florida want more Hispanics than ever to turn out and cast their vote.

Join us for exclusive coverage of the general election through the Nov. 8 election.

The local coalition engaging Hispanic voters includes national and grassroots groups such as Hispanic Federation and Organize NOW.

One way they’re spreading the word is through a new song, called: “Que Vote Mi Gente.”

That’s also the title of their campaign this election year, asking people to exercise their right. It's a Spanish phrase saying, “Vote my people.”

Latin musician and salsa singer Frankie Negrón joined the effort to mobilize Latino voters by remaking the classic hit “Mi Gente.” The song was originally performed by Hector Lavoe and the Fania All Stars back in 1975.

The song's release is a collaboration between Negrón and leaders of the Que Vote Mi Gente campaign, who adapted the original lyrics.

“'Mi Gente' is one of the most widely recognized salsa songs and it reminds us to be proud of our heritage,” said Christina Hernández, a spokesperson for the Que Vote Mi Gente campaign. “It’s precisely the type of message that will resonate with boricuas in Florida to mobilize them and turn them out to vote.”

The coalition also recently opened a new office in downtown Kissimmee meant to answer any questions from residents on the voting process in both English and Spanish.
