The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando has taken one step closer to completion.

  • Orlando approves $45M for Dr. Phillips Center
  • Orange County needs to approve picking up tab
  • Orlando also OKed federal funds for Pulse first responders

The Orlando City Council voted Monday to amend the 2007 Interlocal Agreement for the Community Venues.

The City could not afford to complete the center, because it was short about $45 million. Now, they hope Orange County tourism development funds will pick up the tab for the center's third hall.

The vote now moves on to Orange County Commissioners for approval.

The Orlando City Council also approved a grant from the Department of Justice to the State of Florida to help pay for overtime during the Pulse shooting.

The city was awarded more than $316,000 to help offset law enforcement overtime costs.

On June 12, a gunman opened fire on patrons at Pulse nightclub south of downtown Orlando, killing 49 people and wounding more than 50. It was the worst modern-day mass shooting in U.S. history.
