Nearly 130 people in the U.S. die each day from drug overdoses, most of them involving prescription opioids. Most of the people who abuse prescription drugs say they got the drugs from family or friends.

  • Get rid of expired or unwanted prescription drugs
  • Collection sites set up across Central Florida
  • Nearly 130 people a day die from drug overdose

However, this weekend you can do something to prevent that.

Today is National Drug Take Back Day.

If you have any expired or unwanted prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet, you can dispose of them at several collection sites across Central Florida.

More than 5,000 collection sites have been set up nationwide. In Seminole County, there are 11.

All you have to do is walk inside locations that are accepting prescriptions and drop them off in a box. Many police departments have the drop off boxes in the lobby.

Police won’t ask any questions and you can even black out your name on the bottle.

The director of the Seminole Prevention Coalition said this prevents children or friends from getting into medicine cabinets and taking your prescriptions.

“I just want to plead with the community. medications are important in your life please lock those up and those that you don’t need please dispose of properly,” said Debbie Owens, director of the Seminole Prevention Coalition.

Nearly 2,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in last year, according to officials.

Medications can be dropped off from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
